Last Inflation Report Pushed Markets To Record Highs In June: Could It Happen Again Friday? 5 ETFs To Watch
The inflation report that’s closely watched by the Federal Reserve — the Personal Consumption Expenditure price index — was published on May 31 for April data and sparked a fresh market rally in June, pushing major indexes to their all-time highs. As traders brace for Friday’s PCE price index report for May, scheduled for release at 8:30 a.m. ET, many are wondering whether new favorable inflation data could bring the bulls back to Wall Street after some mixed performance in recent sessions. May’s PCE Report: What Do Economists Expect? The PCE price index is expected to decrease from 2.7% year-on-year in April to 2.6% in May, according to economist consensus data gathered by Econoday. On a monthly basis, the index is forecasted to rise at a 0.1% rate, down from the previous 0.3%. The core PCE price index is projected to drop from 2.8% to 2.6% year-on-year in May, potentially reaching its lowest level since March 2021. Monthly, it is expected to slow from 0.2% to 0.1%. If PCE inflation falls as expected or even more, it could bolster investor expectations of rate cuts, potentially ...Full story available on Benzinga.com

Fed's Bowman Shocks Traders: 'I Remain Willing To Raise' Interest Rates If Progress On Inflation Stalls
Federal Reserve Governor Michelle Bowman stated on Tuesday that it is premature to lower the policy rate, and indicated her readiness to support further rate hikes if inflation worsens. While giving a speech in London, Bowman noted that “we have seen only modest further progress on inflation” in 2024 and warned that increased immigration and continued labor market tightness could sustain high core services inflation. Bowman highlighted that the 12-month measures of total and core Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) inflation have been stable or slightly declined since December, standing at 2.7 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively, in April. The consumer price index (CPI) report for May indicated a decrease in 12-month core CPI inflation to 3.4 percent from 3.6 percent in April. However, average core CPI inflation for the year through May is 3.8 percent, higher than the second half of last year’s average, ...Full story available on Benzinga.com

Stocks Turn To Losses, Bonds Rally On Falling Producer Prices, Rising Jobless Claims: What's Driving Markets Thursday?
Wall Street experienced a rude awakening the day after the Federal Reserve’s June policy meeting, as investors sold off risky assets and shifted to safer bonds and cash in response to the latest batch economic data. Although May’s producer inflation was lower than expected, reinforcing the disinflation narrative and likely boosting the Fed’s confidence on the return to the 2% target, an unexpected increase in unemployment claims dampened risk sentiment, as investors fear symptoms of labor market weakness. The S&P 500 Index was 0.2% lower, potentially snapping a three-day winning streak. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 marginally rose by 0.2%, aided by the positive performance of Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ:AVGO), Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA), as more than 80 tech members within the index traded in the red. Blue chips fell 0.8%, while small caps, as tracked by the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:IWM), tumbled 1.5% erasing all Wednesday’s gains. Treasury yields continued to fall, ...Full story available on Benzinga.com

Producer Inflation Rise Less Than Expected, Jobless Claims Soar: Thursday's Economic Digest
Inflation felt by U.S. producers rose less than expected on an annual basis in May, bolstering market optimism for a sustained decrease in price pressures throughout the economy, following a lower-than-anticipated consumer inflation report released on Wednesday. Simultaneously, the Labor Department reported on Thursday that weekly jobless claims rose more than anticipated, reaching their highest level since August 2023. May Producer Inflation Report: Key Highlights The Producer Price Index (PPI) for final demand increased by 2.2% year-over-year last month, down from the upwardly revised 2.3% rate recorded in April and below the anticipated 2.5%, according to consensus economic data from Econoday. On a monthly basis, the PPI contracted at a 0.2% pace, decelerating from the previous 0.5% and ...Full story available on Benzinga.com

May Inflation Report Clashes With Fed Meeting: Traders Brace For Volatile Wednesday
For the first time since June 2020, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report will be released on the same day as the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. This sets up a potentially volatile Wednesday for financial markets. Following three consecutive months of higher-than-expected inflation readings in the first quarter of 2024, April's data showed an easing in price pressures, aligning with forecasts. The new CPI data will thus be crucial in determining if inflationary pressures are continuing to decline, which could support hopes of reaching the Federal Reserve's 2% target. This heightens the significance of the May inflation report, due from the Bureau of Labor Statistics at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The outcome of the May inflation report will also heavily influence Fed Chair Jerome Powell's stance during his press conference on the same day. A softer inflation reading could bolster the case for interest rate cuts down the road this year, while a higher-than-expected number might necessitate a more aggressive approach, probably reiterating the need to keep rates high for longer. Market participants currently estimate a 50-50 chance of a rate cut in September, with expectations of only one fully priced rate cut by year-end.
